Since 1934 generations of families and individuals have been a part of “The Institute” and its legacy. Initially housed in the first high school for the new community of Wyomissing as the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts, and now serving at an expanded state-of-the-art facility in Sinking Spring, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education is a critical anchor in our community. Our Mission: To connect and enrich our community through arts education, creative performance, and innovative programs.
In 2005 Yocum Institute’s signature theater program for children’s productions and arts education, PrimaryStages Productions, was founded. Our goal is to consistently provide a variety of excellent, quality performances that are accessible to the very young and entertaining to the entire family. From plays inspired by beloved children’s books, to jazz for kids, to holiday-inspired shows, to opera for children (in partnership with Berks Opera), our productions employ professional and up-and-coming professional actors, directors, musicians, scenic designers, and costumers from all over the region.
Through school tours, onsite performances in our black box theater, and performances in libraries and other partnering venues, PrimaryStages Productions have been enjoyed by tens of thousands of audience members throughout Berks County and beyond.
The Yocum Institute for Arts Education today offers extensive classes in visual arts, theater, dance, martial arts, and music. In addition, the Yocum Institute provides outreach programming and residencies, multi-arts and performance summer camps, an arts-based kindergarten and pre-school, family-friendly productions, and a gallery space featuring emerging and local artists.
