Like many outdoor recreation areas in Pennsylvania’s Americana Region, Antietam Lake Park has a long heritage. Just east of Reading, 13.5 are Antietam Lake surounded by 643 acres of park land, provides a beautiful, serene setting for nature-based recreation. The origins of Antietam Lake date back to 1865 when Reading purchased a dam and gristmill on Antietam Creek, with a waterfall now flowing over the 60-foot high solid rock. The original octagonal brick valve house on a stone foundation set within the lake with a wooden bridge to the shore. The 1880 caretaker’s house is also still on the property.
